As newlyweds in the early 1980’s, Michael and Carmen Mauerer owned a retail apparel business in Mexico. He became intensely interested in micro computers and conceived an application that was years ahead of its time. He partnered with a professor of Mathematics and Computer Sciences to create the first version of the program that eventually became Retail Pro. At the time, the concept of using a computer at Point of Sale to track inventory flow was virtually unknown to independent retailers.
Over the next two decades Mauerer and his team built Retail Pro into a sophisticated multi-national Windows-based retail management solution, distributed and used in over 60 countries across the world. It was adopted by a large number of sophisticated regional and multi-national retailers running over 30,000 stores world wide.
In 2002, Intuit purchased Retail Pro’s technology and Mauerer became the manager in charge of retail systems development for one of the world’s most successful large software companies. There he designed and launched QuickBooks POS, used in tens of thousands of US stores. For this accomplishment his leadership was recognized by Intuit’s CEO and Founder (the most rapid such recognition ever achieved in the company’s history).
Having accomplished his personal goals in the entrepreneurial and large corporate approaches to retail software development, Mauerer then took time in 2004 and 2005 to pursue independent interests. Additionally, he undertook to research in depth, with fresh eyes, the current scene in retail technology, from the point of view of the customer and end user - the retailer.
He realized that despite massive advances in technology, large gaps exist between the inherent promise of software and the benefits it actually delivers to the retail business user. He found that retail systems are impeded from fulfilling their promise by islands of automation - disconnected applications managing separate areas of a business. Solutions to this dilemma are a continuing area of interest and contribution.
Michael and Carmen Mauerer live in Clearwater, Florida and have two teenage boys, Jonathan and David.
